explorer will not shift to reverse?

All forward gears shift fine - will not shift into reverse (no noise - just won't move into reverse). No visible leaking. No grinding. No difference when trying to shift into R after running for a bit (hot v. cold). I purchased this vehicle used in January 2007.

You neglected to provide some important info like engine, trans, year? Most of these from 1997 on up come with the 5R55E trans. Common for the low-reverse servo cover gasket to blow out. If there is no 3rd gear, then the direct clutch is gone.
